Shorts National Competition 3

In 2020 the National Competition is positively overflowing with one of the largest programmes in the history of the festival. Whilst this speaks positively of an industry that is growing, developing and nurturing new talent there is also a sense of inclusivity. Yes there are films made by Estonians that are shot in Estonia. But there are also films from Estonian filmmakers made out outside the country while directors from different countries – many of which are from the BFM – are making films within Estonia.

This diversity is vital for film culture – as it is for a progressive society in general – and shows that a country with only a small point of view can allow for a wide range of viewpoints in an eclectic and entertaining mix of fiction and documentaries.

The Estonian animation films on offer balance between the seasoned and the newcomers, between caring for your loved ones and rooting for strangers. They involve an almost trademarked sense of humour but also a longing to move beyond the ordinary, and a well-defined need to simply connect.

The brand new collective of a successful start-up company decides to celebrate its sale to a major corporation with a party on an uninhabited island. The digitalized millenials who step from their screens directly into the wilderness soon discover that coping with actual problems in life is not just a click away. After arriving on the island it becomes clear that during the frenzy of moving the company they forgot to take along the whole stash of drinks and the island lacks mobile coverage – not to mention wi-fi – and there are no electrical sockets in nature to charge their phones. The smart crowd is in danger of dying of thirst for pleasure.

The film signifies the actions which incite religious violence and broaden the divide of cultural and moral beliefs in society. The film shadows two clashing perspectives both of which are searching for safety in their own communities and these perspectives blend testimonies of trauma and manifestos of power. By using poetic documentation, the director acknowledges that there are more than two sides to every story and intertwines these sentiments, embodiments and experiences into one journey to understand what is happening behind the doors of communities the other hasn’t experienced.
